On November 2nd, the American voters hit the polls for the midterm elections. A whole one third of Senate seats and the entire House of Representatives were being voted on. Once the dust settled, online poker champion and democrat Barney Frank was reelected to his seat. Even with this victory, the Democrats lost control of the House which more than likely will lead to Frank losing his duties as the chairman of the Financial Services Committee.

The Financial Services Committee has been a large advocate of bringing positive internet gambling bills to the table. This includes Franks’s HR 2267. This issue has not been addressed on the House floor as of yet, but it does have 70 sponsors from both the Republicans and Democrats.

The Poker Players Alliance kept a close eye on the results of the Tuesday elections. PPA Executive Director, John Pappas, told Poker News Daily that he was upset to see Barney might lose his chairman spot on the committee. Even with this happening, the PPA has done an excellent job at recruiting more on the committee.

It looks as if the next chairman will be Alabama Republican Spencer Bachus. PPA members feel they will have a challenge converting Bachus, but even he hasn’t stated a clear position on the success of the UIGEA legislation. Bachus and his staff have stated there needs to be a thorough review of how the government handles online poker.

The founder of the UIGEA, Bob Googlatte, was elected for another two years for his seat. PPA members hope that the reelection of pro-online gambling members Shelley Berkley and Jim McDermott will help their cause. Pappas is excited to meet with the new members of Congress in the hope to educate them on their issues.

The effects of this recent election are still yet to be seen. The new blood in the Congress will be good for the issue. It’s still unclear if the internet gambling and internet poker issue will be brought up before the end of 2010. Lawmakers will return to Capitol Hill for what is likely to be a “lame duck” session. Yet, as Pappas has stated, the best chance to get something done in 2010 will be during this very lame duck session.
