One of poker’s major players, Peter Eastgate, has decided to throw in the towel and give up playing poker for good. Peter was the champion of the World Series Of Poker Main Event just two years ago. At a young age of 24, he has decided this is not the time for him to be playing the game.
This isn’t too much of a surprise since we have seen many players call it quits in the past like Shaun Deeb, Gus Hansen, and Jonas Danielsson. The big surprise was how quickly Eastgate gave up on the game. No one really knew that his path in life wasn’t focused on playing poker for the long run and this has thrown some analysts for a loop.
Peter states, “When I started playing poker for a living, it was never my goal to spend the rest of my life as a professional poker player.” He continued to state that his goal was to become financially independent and with his win in 2008, he was able to accomplish that pretty quickly. Peter says after 20 months of touring and playing since his big win, he feels his motivation is lacking for the high-level poker games.
Peter doesn’t know where his life is going to lead him, but is excited about what’s to come in the future. He apologizes to his fans for the abrupt announcement, but also wants to thank all those that supported him including PokerStars, friends, and colleagues. Only time will tell how long he is away from the game.
