On November 2nd, the United States voters hit the polls once again for the midterm elections. The voters had the power to elect the entire House of Representatives and one third of the Senate. After the dust settled, online gambling champ, Barney Frank (D-MA), was reelected with a 54% vote.
The effect of Barney winning his place in the House again won’t do him much good for holding his position as Chairman of the Financial Services Committee. This is mostly due to the fact that the Democrats lost control over the House.
The Financial Services Committee has been a major player in much of the pro-online gambling bills that have been brought to the House’s attention this past year, including Frank’s HR 2267. HR 2267 is the Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act. The bill was brought up to the Committee in July, but still has not been debated on the House floor. It does have a solid following of 70 sponsors of both sides.
On a good note for pro-internet gamblers, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid won yet another six-year term for Nevada. This was largely due to a push by the Poker Players Alliance, which fully supported Reid.
The hope of all internet gamblers is that the issue will be brought to the House’s attention by the end of 2010, but it looks like this could only have a dim chance of happening. Both sides agree that there is change that must be made to the current laws, and we can only wait to see what the verdict is when it’s brought to the attention of the decision makers.
