Florida has been getting serious in plans to expand gambling in their state. Recent talks between Governor Rick Scott and representatives of the Las Vegas Sands Corp. took place to discuss Florida’s future gaming landscape.
Scott’s motivation may be an effort to increase taxable revenue for the state. Scott seems to be keeping an open mind to legalized gaming, reviewing proposals for a gambling measure written by big-money Las Vegas-based casinos Wynn Casinos and Las Vegas Sands Corp.
While Rick Scott’s campaign was unsupportive of gaming as a state interest, he has become open to the idea of poker tables, slots and other casino-run facets. He stated however that he doesn’t want “Florida to become very largely dependent on gaming for revenue.”
Las Vegas gaming proponents use a persuasive argument for the Sunshine state to benefit from more gaming. “The concept is not just to create a source of revenue for the state that could equal or surpass the lottery, stated Al Cardenas of Wynn Casinos. “More important is the billions that would be invested in our state and the creation of tens of thousands of permanent, high-paying jobs.” Currently the state allows Lottery and seven casinos are operated by Seminole Indian Tribes.
