ESPN reported Wednesday night that the proposed legislation that was in the works by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) is dead. The bill would have legalized online gaming in America and allowed players to play freely on the internet.
The head of the PPA, John Pappas was reported stating that he has not given up hope. With 2011, the new year brings another chance to convince lawmakers to pass the bill. He stated, “The online poker bill that was floating around needs some improvement, so the PPA wants to go back to Senator Reid and talk about how we can improve on his current draft. There’s going to be a renewed focus in the Senate and we’ll be taking some of the legislation in a different direction so that it’s not focused on the Financial Service Committee, where we have a known opponent.”
The Financial Service Committee Congressman Spencer Baccus has been in direct opposition to all online gambling for some time. He replaces Rep. Barney Frank (D-MMA) this year , who was always an online gaming supporter.
