California is expected to get behind legislation for Internet gambling institution for the state. Mirroring the New Jersey Senate who recently proposed gambling legislation successfully, California will follow suit with multi-tiered support. The sticking point for creating a bill for online gambling in the state was the cool reception by the Native American tribes, who rule legal gambling in California.
Melanie Brenner, executive director of Poker Voters of America, noted that “the challenge has always been with the tribes, and we have made great strides there. We are just ironing out a few minor details and then we will be able to make a public announcement of their support very soon.” Brenner believes that while both houses of the legislature are solidly Democratic, with Democrat Jerry Brown’s presence and experience, there is a good chance the bill will be passed in 2011.
If the bill goes through in New Jersey, it would be a model for the draft of the California and Florida legislation. California needs a sponsor of their bill, as State Sen. Rod Wright is caught up in indictment trouble following the claim of residency he used to be elected. Troubles aside, the Poker Voters of America believe California legislators are poised to appoint a new champion for the bill and take forceful steps to make the bill happen.
