As usual, the World Series of Poker Main Event brought all the excitement and thrill we desire from such an event. The high stakes and tough decisions are a situation poker players simultaneously envy and dread. In the end, one victor was left standing with almost $9 million worth of earnings. Not a bad week of play by anyone’s standards!
Jonathan Duhamel was the winner. A 23-year-old poker pro from Canada, Duhamel came into the final table as the chip leader. Even though history hasn’t proven this to be much of an advantage, Jonathan was able to hold out the entire championship. Unfortunately for Duhamel, he did see some chip losses and found himself in trouble a few times before he landed in a heads up battle at the end with John Racener.
There were quite a few hands during which Duhamel found his chip stack being devoured by the rest of the players. Italian player Filippo Candio came with a strong raise with pocket aces that Duhamel called with ace-king. This took a good bit of his stack away and moved Duhamel closer to the rest of the players’ numbers. More losses by Duhamel against players like Joseph Cheong had us all wondering if he could really pull it off.
At one point, Duhamel was one of the lower stacks on the table, but this didn’t hold him back from winning it all. His aggressive play late in the game caused big stack wins and gave him the advantage. Heads up play lasted for 43 hands between Duhamel and Racener before Jonathan claimed the victory with an Ace high after the final hand played out. Joe Cada, last year’s winner, awarded the bracelet and the cash to Duhamel.
