The online poker giant, PokerStars.net has quietly built up a far reaching web of poker tournaments the world over, excluding the US up until 2010. But, the live tournament network set up for a change with the launch of NAPT (North American Poker Tour) in 2010, and there is no sign of slowing down in 2011.
Stretching back to 2004, Pokerstars launched their first live tournament, the European Poker Tour. Seven locations slotted for intense play brought in hundreds of thousands of viewers and opened up the game of Hold-em to audiences. They now have 13 stops on the EPT tour which will continue to grow. Next was the four-location Asia Pacific Poker Tour, founded in 2007. After this followed the Latin American Poker Tour holding three events beginning in 2008. Many small regional tours in Pacific Rim, UK, Ireland and other countries followed.
However, the US was a market they were quietly sizing up. In 2010 the NAPT PokerStars Caribbean Adventure erupted with a paradise location, real-time coverage on national television and big-name poker stars joining in. They couldn’t have asked for more in a North American launch, and three other great tournaments closely followed. At the Venetian in Las Vegas the NAPT held an exciting and exclusive event, followed by the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. The fourth stop of the season was at The Bicycle Casino in LA, filled with celebrity players and the sheer force of poker greats from around the world. This final stop was covered by ESPN2 recently with the 81-Player Bounty Shootout.
