Peter Eastgate, the 2008 WSOP Main Event Champion, shocked the poker world in October by announcing he was leaving poker. He also placed the coveted WSOP up for auction on bay, with all proceeds going to the UNICEF charity. With the clock ticking on the auction the bid price has now reached $100,000, with delivery to take place before Jan 6th.
There has been a lot of buzz and controversy surrounding this auction, as famous cash game and Party Poker pro, Tony G saying he would enter the bidding and buy the bracelet to give his dog a shiny collar. Tony G seemed to know beforehand bidding would reach this high, “Carry on bidding, this bracelet is going to go for six-figures. I respect Zasko too much to not pay what it takes, but I do have limits. For $2 million, I could buy him his own private jet!”
Here is the description of the bracelet from the bay auction “Stamped 18 k, white gold ‘World Series of Poker 2008’ Main Event winner’s medal bracelet. Consisting of 291 small ‘Brilliant’ cut diamonds set on a center medal, which is held on an 18k white gold wristwatch style bracelet. Carat: Total Diamond weight 2.81ct. Clarity: VS Color: Colorless. Total gold weight: 168 grams. Manufactured by Corum.”
This isn’t the first time a major medal or award has been auctioned for charity as Olympic swimmer, Anthony Ervin, auctioned his 2004 Gold Medal and ended up raising $17K. These WSOP Main Event bracelets are very rare, so it’s not that far fetched to see it reach these prices. Add in a couple colorful characters , like Tony G, with too much spare time and some money to burn and the UNICEF charity should end up with a nice donation.
